Happy June!

Hello Parents and Div 10 Students,

Thanks for another focused work week.  We are almost there!  Please try to finish the year sprinting because the race is not over yet.  We had another busy week at the Q!

This week we covered the following learning concepts:

Math: we started our probability unit this week.  We explored the difference between theoretical probability and experimental probability.  We discussed the four ways to express the probability of a favourable outcome: orally, as a fraction, as a percent and as a decimal.  Lastly, we looked at organizing the number of combinations of two independent events using a tree diagram ie flipping two coins.

Important Reminder: Golf course presentations are this Monday!

LA: we've been learning how to write an essay.  We spent this week talking about how to plan for an essay and the organization/format of an essay (introduction-thesis statement, supporting paragraphs and conclusion).  The students practiced writing a thesis statement and introduction and built an essay map to help them write their BC First Nations essay.  We also worked on our invention/advertisement.

Socials:  In Socials we finished our BC First Nation note taking sessions this week.  The students were presented with an essay question and they have to use their notes to help them write a five paragraph expository essay.  We have been breaking down each section to show that writing an essay is a process and that it takes time.

Gym:  BC soccer festival was a huge hit with our class on Wednesday.  It was nice to see all the talented soccer players we have in our class. We also enjoyed challenging Mr. Mann's and Shultz's classes to some Ultimate Frisbee games!

French: learning how to write food related sentences.

Thanks for a great work week.  Enjoy your weekend.

Reminder to get you bowling permission forms in.  We are going bowling on Thursday.  (bring appropriate footwear).

Hello from the teacher who lost his voice:(

Hello Parents and Div 10 Students,

Thank you to all those parents that helped with the grade 7 pizza fundraiser.  On another note thank you to all the students who worked so hard preparing for our school dance.  I was really proud of every student that participated.  My apologies parents and students for not being at school the past couple of days.  On Wednesday evening I lost my voice and I still have not fully recovered it yet.  Thank you to Ms. Appleton for stepping in for me.

This week in room 231 we covered the following:

LA- the students performed their oral stories to a small group and we started to discuss the parts of an essay(introduction, thesis statement, body and conclusion).  The students practiced writing thesis statements based on a variety of questions and topics.  We also explored advertising techniques.  Each student spent this week planning and filing an advertisement using I-Movie for their golf course.  Next week the students will be presenting their golf courses to a panel of hand selected judges.

Math- much of our Math time this week was sucked up by filming advertisements for our geometry golf course.  Next week I'm hoping to start some probability.  The students did get some time to play Sum Dog and work on reviewing all skills.

Social Studies- we are finishing off our research on BC First Nations.  The last region we will look at is the NorthWestern  part of BC and the First Nations principles of learning.  This will be the backbone of our first essay.

Gym: we spent some of this week practising our flash mop waltz dance and playing minor games such as blastball, corridor ball and mushroom ball.

Thanks for a great week.  I'm looking forward to being back in the classroom on Monday morning.

Upcoming Events: bowling/hot chocolates field trip, grade 7 girls field trip, golf course presentations
