Merry Christmas!

I just wanted to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas break.  Thank you for all of your hard work this year.  I look forward to being your full time teacher in the New Year!

Sorry. I do not have much to report on in terms of learning this week. I think that the Christmas concert was our celebration of learning.  I'm super proud of everyone who participated in our concert.

Take care and see you all in 2016!

Merry Friday:)

Hello parents and students,

Thank you for another awesome work week. Christmas break is just around the corner and I appreciate your continued focus and hard work.  Next week will be extremely busy with Christmas concert rehersals and year end activities.  Hang in there we are almost there!

This week in room 140 (231 was getting painted) we discussed the following topics.

LA- we read a new short story called "The Sniper" and discussed point of view.  We wrote our own sequel version of the story where we are focusing on improving our word choice (vivid verbs and colouful adjectives).  We also listened to a story called "My Teacher's Secret Life," and did some comic strip writing.

Science- every student was involved in writing a lab write up for our paper airplane experiments (Question, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Observations and Conclusion).  After testing their airplane 8 times, students had to calculate the mean, median, mode and range of their data.  Our next steps will be to graph our data and look for which variable change worked the best.  Ask your child about this assignment, I'm sure that they can tell you a few things about aerodynamics and flight.

Gym- this week in gym we played a variety of fun tag games, yoshi and throwing games.  In the New year we will start a Basketball unit!

Music- the students have been practicing all week for their Christmas concert.  We are in need of some parent volunteers for our 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm concert times on Dec 17 (we don't have any).  Please let us know if you can help out!  Students also need to have their costumes finalized and ready by today!

Art- we have been working on creating a intermediate mosaic.  We are hoping that we can display our art work in the New Year in a special location for others to see.

Just a reminder that we need to fill our Christmas hamper for our family in need.  If you could bring in a $2 donation and the item of food that you signed up for that would be wonderful.

Have a very enjoyable weekend.  You all deserve it!

Happy Friday!

Hello parents and Div 10 students,

It was a very busy week in room 231.  We had a few special guests (Will Stroet and Corwin Fox) help us produce a song about compassion.  What an awesome experience and opportunity to look at how to write and produce a song!

This week in room 231 we covered the following topics:

Science- we are learning about the Scientific Method and applying it to building/flying paper airplanes.  Today we discussed the physics behind flight (thrust, lift, gravity, drag) and the forces to consider when testing your airplane.  Other concepts that we will cover during this assignment are: how to calculate mean, median, mode, independent, dependant, controlled variables.

LA- we continued with our short stories unit.  We reviewed PLOT and completed a learner reflection.  We read a short story called "Raising Eyebrows."

Art- we continued to work on our Capturing Compassionate project.  All the students worked with Will Stroet a singer/songwriter that works for CBC to write the lyrics for a song about compassion for self and others.  Yesterday, we recorded our song in Corwin Fox's recording studio in Cumberland.  What an awesome experience!

Gym- we talked about "target heart rate" and learned how to calculate our heart rate. We also learned how to play Army Dodge Ball.

Thanks for a great week.  Have an enjoyable weekend!

(Exposition, Conflict, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution).  Our goal is to improve the middle of our stories.

Socials Studies/Art- we continued with our Capturing Compassion project.  Karin McKinnon (a professional photographer) spent some more time with us this week helping us understanding how we can capture compassion through pictures.  Our next steps will be to write a song that connects to our pictures and compassion.  On Thursday we will be going on a field trip to a recording studio in Cumberland!

Important reminder- field trip forms went home today.  Please bring them back by Tuesday.

Gym- In gym we covered the following games: capture the flag dodge ball and cricket ball.
